A Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number is a 10-digit code that identifies either you or your business to HMRC. When you have a UTR number, you’ll use it whenever you're dealing with your tax or talking to the taxman. From claiming a tax refund to filing a Self Assessment tax return, your UTR will make sure HMRC always knows who it's talking to.
