The first step for a business wishing to become involved is to sign the Armed Forces Covenant, which is a pledge made to uphold the principle that those who serve or have served, and their families are treated fairly. The Covenant can be signed by businesses of all sizes, charities, public sector organisations and local authorities.
Guidelines and a template for a potential pledge can be downloaded via the Gov.uk website, and direct advice and support is provided by a regional campaign director from the Reserve Forces and Cadet Association (RFCA).
The Covenant is a statement of support made by businesses to current and potential future employees who may be involved or had previous employment with the military community, either as serving members, Reservists, Adult Cadet Volunteers or families.
In recognition of RIFT’s continuing efforts to enhance our support for the military community, our MD, Bradley Post, signed an updated pledge in October 2019.
It is clear that businesses and organisations will seek to employ the right candidate with the relevant skills, experience and enthusiasm for the job. Companies supporting the military community take advantage of access to the diverse pool of talent of veterans, recognising the value of their training and skills. In addition to technical skills learned whilst pursuing their careers, military veterans commonly excel in organisation, communication, working under pressure and commitment to succeed, and have a positive impact upon the wider team within a business.
The Career Transition Partnership (CTP) is the official provider of Armed Forces resettlement, and enables businesses to reach out to the approximate 14,000 serving personnel who retire from the Forces each year with advertised roles.
Forces Families Jobs supports family members of personnel currently serving in the UK Armed Forces, enabling companies who are Forces friendly to advertise training and job opportunities.
Adding additional measures of support within a company HR policy for employees who wish to become involved with the Reserves or Adult Cadet Forces enhances a partnership approach between employer and employee. The benefits to be gained by employers are significant, particularly in terms of employee retention.
To ensure the message reaches employees, and doesn’t remain a hidden element of an unseen HR document, it is recommended to include reference to the measures within induction and annual training.
Companies who actively wish to encourage participation may take the added step taken by RIFT in our series of Military Engagement Events, and invite members of the Armed Forces to meet their teams, including from Regular units, Reserves and Adult Cadet Forces.
Contact details of local units within the South East of England can be accessed below:

There are many military charities striving to assist serving members, veterans and families, which make a huge difference to those support. A detailed list of military charities can be accessed via the CTP website, which outlines their key activities and contact details.
As active supporters of the military community, RIFT are proud sponsors of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, having donated over £250,000 to date (as at December 2019). As the national charity of the British Army, the charity provides timely, practical and financial support to Army families, helping with housing, education and training for employment. They support the physically disabled, the mentally ill, the homeless, the unemployed and the elderly, with the ethos of providing a “hand up, not a hand out”.
ABF The Soldiers’ Charity also has a well established grants programme of support to other charities and organisations working to support soldiers, veterans and their families, typically funding over 100 charities in a year.
