EA Sports’ FIFA series is more than just a finely crafted simulation of the beautiful game. It’s a genuine gaming legacy that has turned players all over the world into football fanatics. Now, the partnership that struck the back of the net time and time again with a string of acclaimed successes has finally run out the clock. EA Sports and FIFA have parted ways.
So why is this happening and what does it mean for the future? Well, you can cross FIFA 24 off your Christmas list for a start. In fact, EA’s pulled all its previous FIFA titles off the big digital storefronts, from Steam to Epic. If you’re looking to slot a new football fixture into your gaming schedule this year, chances are the name of the game will be EA Sports FC 24. With demand for EA’s football games still at fever pitch, it seems like the company no longer thinks it needs the FIFA name to sell them.
They could be onto something, too. Even without FIFA, the early access period for EA Sports FC 24 saw a massive 6.8 million players kicking the game around. That’s 25% more than they scored with FIFA 23. Given that FIFA was reportedly asking for over $1 billion (around £817,360,000) for licensing rights over the next 4 years, there’s an argument for saying EA made the right call – at least from a money standpoint.
Even so, there was probably more than just the licensing fee involved in the decision to split one of the most successful partnerships in gaming history. For one thing, there’s talk of disagreements about the creative direction the FIFA games should be taking. EA was said to be looking into running esports tournaments and releasing non-fungible tokens (NFTs) based on the games. FIFA, on the other hand, wanted EA to stick to handling the core game – possibly so that they could look into other money-making opportunities themselves.
In the end, the two sides couldn’t meet at mid-field and the whole game was called off. For now, EA Sports FC looks likely to be the big name in football simulations. With a long list of high-profile partners including Premier League, UEFA Champions League and many more across the men’s and women’s game, EA is backing their new game with serious money and commitment.
EA Sports have called EA Sports FC 24 a fresh opportunity to innovate, create and evolve. Does that mean it’s going to be the only game in town, though. Not according to FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino. Asked about the future of FIFA video games, he had this to say:
“I can assure you that the only authentic, real game that has the FIFA name will be the best one available for gamers and football fans… the constant is the FIFA name and it will remain forever and remain the best.”
